Supermarket 2.0
An innovation leap in logistics
Supermarket 2.0
An innovation leap in logistics
Goods-to-person picking solution implemented in volume production at Audi Ingolstadt for the first time in the automotive industry
Challenge
Supermarkets are logistics areas where employees pick and pack components in the correct sequence for assembly. To do so, employees typically have to walk along aisles covering up to 20 km in distance during one shift.
Together with our partner Audi we’ve taken a new perspective and developed a holistic Supermarket 2.0 solution that reverses the traditional picking process by bringing the goods to the employee on autonomous mobile robots, eliminating the inefficiency of walking and improving picking accuracy.
Solution
- 35 arculee AMRs for human-safe operations
- Inventory management on 400+ container spaces
- arculus Fleet as the central AMR control software
- 4 picking stations with pick/put by scan
- Service & support for robust delivery of 2 mio. picks p.a.
Hear from our project partner
“With Supermarket 2.0 and Audi Fleet Manager we are marking an important milestone on the way to smart logistics of the future.”
“Worldwide, the Audi experts benefit hugely from the experience the colleagues in Ingolstadt acquired with this pioneering work.”
“Supermarket 2.0 shows that the industrial world is now ready for goods-to-person logistics, that it is no longer the exclusive domain of e-commerce giants like Amazon. We are grateful to Audi for making this important first step jointly with us.”
Audi Fleet Manager
Central fleet management for AGVs / AMRs
Audi Fleet Manager
Central fleet management for AGVs / AMRs
Central fleet management platform rolled out as a robust foundation for Audi’s automation roadmap, integrating different types of AGVs / AMRs via standardized VDA5050 interface
Challenge
Automation of intralogistics and production, across plants and geographies, is pivotal to Audi’s competitiveness. This requires fast growing fleets of AGVs and AMRs from different suppliers to be controlled in the same layout, with highest efficiency.
arculus Fleet has been implemented as Audi’s central AGV / AMR control platform, ensuring robustness from design to operations, data-driven insight, as well as synergies in procurement and IT.
Solution
- Mission-critical fleet control in assembly, body shop and logistics applications
- Integration of arculee, MLR, Grenzebach and other 3rd party robots
- Proprietary qualification tool for 3rd party integration via VDA5050 MiniCommander
- Flexible interfaces to factory automation infrastructure
- Custom KPI reporting and 3D visualization

Modular Assembly of Car Parts
Pioneering a new dimension of manufacturing
Modular Assembly of Car Parts
Pioneering a new dimension of manufacturing
Full-scope Modular Production System with real-time controlled product and material flow implemented in series production of an auto OEM
Challenge
Facing increased product variability and market uncertainty, the OEM was looking for a Modular Production lighthouse project in a car parts pre-assembly to serve as the blueprint for a broader roll-out.
arculus was chosen as the solution partner to deliver a Modular Production System that controls the product flow through multiple workstations where car parts are pre-assembled, using a fleet of AMRs, and fully in sync with automated goods-to-person material handling.
Solution
- 25 arculee AMRs for human-safe operations
- Real-time control of product flow at 7 working stations
- Assembly of 2,500 parts per day over two shifts
- arculus Fleet as the central AMR control software
- 35 logistics tables and 35 material shelves
- Worker information system and rotation logic
